GEO Tips to Get Cited in AI Search

Published: June 30, 2026 6 min

The basics of GEO — getting cited in AI search — come down to three things: structure your content to answer questions directly, strengthen your trust signals (E-E-A-T), and allow AI crawlers to access your site. AI tends to cite information that’s clear, trustworthy, and easy to read.

I’m Naohiro Hayashi, creator of Soreda!. This article covers the basics of making your site easy for AI to cite. A note first: what follows are principles generally cited as effective, not a guarantee of results. AI search is still evolving, with no certain right answer, so read it with that in mind.

To get cited in AI search, you need to become “clear, trustworthy information” in the AI’s eyes. Information that answers plainly and has grounds is more likely to be cited than something vague.

AI cites “clear, trustworthy information”

AI tends to cite writing that answers a question head-on and facts that come with a source. Writing where it’s hard to tell what you mean falls out of the running. The basic aim is to be “information that’s easy to understand — for people and for AI alike.” If a human skimming your page can’t find the answer fast, an AI won’t either.

First, know where you stand with a diagnosis

Rather than starting at random, it’s more efficient to know where you stand first. Spreading yourself thin without knowing what’s weak makes results hard to see. If you haven’t checked yet, start from Does Your Business Show Up in AI Search?.

GEO measures to make yourself easy to cite

Concrete measures fall into three directions: your content’s “structure,” “trust,” and the “technical” side.

Structure content to answer questions directly

Structure your content to answer the user’s question from the conclusion first. Organizing it as a set of frequently asked questions (FAQ) is especially effective — by one analysis, FAQ-format content is reported to be cited by AI at roughly twice the rate. Putting a one-sentence answer right under a heading also helps AI lift out the key point.

Strengthen trust with E-E-A-T

Who wrote it, with what experience and expertise, and on what grounds? Showing these trust signals (E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) makes AI more likely to judge you a trustworthy source. First-hand information, original data, a named author, and cited sources all help.

Allow AI crawlers to access your site

If AI can’t reach your site in the first place, there’s nothing to cite. Allowing AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot in your robots.txt is a precondition for being cited. As for “llms.txt,” an AI-oriented guidance file that’s also been proposed — its effectiveness is not proven as of now, so it’s best treated as a low-cost early signal at most. Not blocking AI crawlers matters more.

GEO isn’t a “guarantee” — it raises your odds of being cited

GEO measures don’t guarantee citation in AI search; they’re efforts to raise the odds of being cited. Much of how AI works isn’t public, and there’s no certain right answer.

Algorithms are uncertain — build steadily on principles

How AI picks what to cite isn’t fully known, and the mechanics change. That’s exactly why, rather than chasing the latest trick, it’s surer to build steadily on principles that age well — “answer clearly,” “be trustworthy.”

After improving, re-diagnose to check the effect

Once you’ve made changes, don’t leave it there — diagnose again and check what shifted. Comparing before and after with a GEO diagnosis shows which measures seem to be working. Repeating improvement and diagnosis is what leads to steady progress. You can re-diagnose from Does Your Business Show Up in AI Search?.

FAQ

Q. Where should I start? A. Grasp your weak points with a diagnosis first, then start with the highest-priority measures. You don’t need to tackle everything at once.

Q. If I do these, will I definitely get cited? A. No. Measures raise the odds of being cited, not a sure guarantee — because AI’s algorithms are uncertain.

Q. How long until I see results? A. There’s no instant effect. The timeframe is hard to pin down, and ongoing work is the premise — treat GEO as a habit, not a one-time fix.

Q. How much does it cost? A. GEO diagnosis is ticket-based, counted per run. See the official site for current details.

The basics of GEO aren’t clever tricks but grounded work: “answer clearly,” “build trust,” “let AI read you.” There’s no guarantee, but you can steadily raise your odds of being cited. Start by knowing your weak points through a diagnosis, and begin with what matters most.
