Why Your Site Isn't Ranking, and How to Find Out

Published: June 30, 2026 6 min

The reasons a site doesn’t rank in search fall into three broad directions: content, technical, and trust. Your page doesn’t answer the search intent; there’s a technical problem like titles or page speed; or your site’s trust signals and inbound links are lacking. One of these — or several together — is holding back your rankings.

I’m Naohiro Hayashi, creator of Soreda!. I built an SEO diagnosis tool myself and have looked at many sites with it, and from that experience I’ll lay out the main reasons a site doesn’t rank and how to find your issues. A note first: rankings are decided by Google’s algorithm, and there’s no sure way to rank at the top. Fixing causes one by one, steadily, is the premise.

There’s a reason your site isn’t ranking

When a site doesn’t rank, it isn’t bad luck — there’s usually a concrete, identifiable cause. Pinpoint the cause and the next move becomes clear, instead of guessing.

”Build a page and it ranks” isn’t how it works

Simply publishing a page doesn’t make it rank. Search engines pick, from among countless pages, the ones useful to users to show at the top. A page with no reason to be chosen gets buried, however you make it.

Causes fall into three directions

The reasons you don’t rank sort into three broad directions — content, technical, and trust. Sorting out which direction the problem lies in is the first step to finding your issue.

The main reasons a site doesn’t rank

The main reasons a site doesn’t rank are that the content doesn’t answer the search intent, there’s a technical problem, or trust is lacking. Let’s take them in turn.

The content doesn’t answer the search intent

When a user searches that term, does the page answer what they actually want to know? This matters most. A page full of what you want to say, but not answering the searcher’s question, struggles to rank. A gap from the search intent is an easily overlooked cause — and it’s easy to fall into, because you know your own offering far better than you know the question your visitor typed in.

Technical problems

Are titles and descriptions set properly? Is the site’s structure clear? Are pages fast? Are they easy to view on a smartphone? Technical issues like these hold back rankings even when the content itself is good. Plain but foundational, they tell. They’re also often the quickest wins, since many can be fixed once and stay fixed.

Who wrote it, with what experience and expertise? Is it referenced or mentioned by other sites? When these trust signals (E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) are thin, a search engine is less likely to judge you a trustworthy source. New sites especially have little accumulated trust, so this often tells. Meeting these principles doesn’t guarantee a ranking, but failing to meet them keeps the top out of reach.

How to find your issues

To find your issues, sort out the causes through a diagnosis rather than by assumption. Once you know the cause, you can prioritize and move to improvement.

Sort causes by diagnosis, not by assumption

Acting on a hunch like “probably not enough content” makes you miss the real cause. Score your current state with a manual search check or an SEO diagnosis tool, and sort the causes based on fact.

Once you know the issue, prioritize and improve

It’s not unusual to find several causes. Rather than fixing everything at once, prioritize by impact and work through them. Where to start is covered in Where to Start with SEO: Setting Priorities.

FAQ

Q. Is there a way to rank fast? A. There’s no shortcut. Fixing causes one by one, steadily, is what proves reliable in the end, and it holds up far better than any quick trick that tries to game the algorithm.

Q. What if there are several causes? A. Prioritize by impact and fix them one at a time. You don’t need to tackle them all at once.

Q. Can I fix them myself? A. Many of the basic causes you can handle yourself. Start with the highest-priority ones, and bring in help only for the parts that genuinely need it.

Q. How much does it cost? A. SEO diagnosis is ticket-based, counted per run. See the official site for current details.

There’s always a reason a site doesn’t rank. Sort out whether the problem is in content, technical, or trust — by diagnosis, not assumption. Once you know the cause, all that’s left is to prioritize and fix. Start by checking where your site stands.
